Thirteen letters from historian Henry Adams to Anne (Palmer) Fell, 17 Dec. [1884]-15 Nov. 1890, from Washington, D.C., Quincy, Mass., and Apia, Samoa. Anne Palmer was a friend of Henry Adams' wife Marian "Clover" Adams. The letters primarily discuss personal matters, including his grief at the death of Clover Adams in December of 1885; the birth of Anne Fell's daughter, Marian Fell, who was named for Clover; Adams' trip to Japan in 1886; his writing; his wish to travel; news of mutual friends; and a trip to Samoa in 1890 and the people there. Adams also writes about financial matters, including the house he was having built on Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C.; his investment in Florida land; and the recession.

Henry Adams, grandson of John Quincy Adams, was educated at Harvard and served as secretary to his father, Charles Francis Adams, when he was Minister to England. He rejected a political career to teach history at Harvard and edit The North American review, 1870-1877, then returned to Washington.
